Light Housekeeping
Light housekeeping is designed for a caregiver to maintain the cleanliness and walking path of the area in the home for the client. To be clear, getting rid of a housekeeper who provides deep cleaning is not a wise decision. Light housekeeping is wiping down the kitchen countertop after preparing a lunch and wiping down the shower door. Light housekeeping does not mean heavy scrubbing, moving furniture or cleaning out cupboards.
Cleaning is Secondary to Hands on Personal Care
Light housekeeping typically refers to basic household tasks that a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) might perform as part of in-home care services. These tasks are generally focused on maintaining a clean and safe environment for the client but do not involve deep cleaning or heavy labor. Common light housekeeping duties include:
- Dusting: Wiping down surfaces to remove dust from furniture, shelves, and other areas.
- Sweeping and Mopping: Cleaning floors in areas where the client frequently spends time.
- Vacuuming: Vacuuming carpets and rugs, especially in high-traffic areas.
- Doing Dishes: Washing dishes after meals or loading and unloading the dishwasher.
- Laundry: Washing, drying, folding, and sometimes putting away laundry for the client.
- Changing Bed Linens: Stripping and making the bed, and changing linens as needed.
- Taking Out Trash: Emptying wastebaskets and taking out the trash.
- Cleaning Bathrooms: Light cleaning of the bathroom of the client, such as wiping down sink, counter, emptying the trash can and toilet.
- Organizing: Helping to keep commonly used areas organized and clutter-free.
- Meal Preparation: Simple meal preparation and cleanup, ensuring the kitchen is left tidy afterward.
These tasks are generally considered part of the CNA’s role when they are secondary to the primary focus of providing care and support to the client. More intensive or specialized cleaning tasks are typically not included in light housekeeping and might require additional services.
